A Transition

Mr. Steelhead,
           
        It seems like it was only yesterday that we were beginning our fall season together. You were entering the rivers and so were anglers. But now, sadly,  it is time to say our goodbyes. Panfish and bass are abundant in the lakes and ponds and smallies are once again biting in the rivers. It was a good run, Mr. Steelhead, and I wish you a safe and happy journey back to the lake. Who knows, we may even see each other again this fall.

Orvis Clearwater Spey Rods

           

         I had heard that Orvis was coming out with a new rod and I figured that they were talking about the Superfine Glass series. But no, they were talking about the Clearwater Spey rods. I have never used a Spey rod before but would love to. These new rods are great beginner Spey rods. You can get anything from a 5wt to a 9wt for only $325. I'm looking forward to when I get to try these out.

Crap! Slush!

I drove an hour and a half for this.  "Mama always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."~Forrest Gump. Well Forrest, Mama says the same for steelhead fishing. You could get ice, slush, rain, snow, the rapture. It's totally unpredictable.

Frozen flies, YAY!!!

Everything was frozen yesterday. The guides on my rod, my line, my flies, my waders, myself, the river, everything. It was the most miserable steelhead weather I have been in. The temperature was 15 degrees! Miserable. If you have been in worse weather for fishing I want to hear about it.

I think we need to set up webcams all around the river so we don’t drive for an hour or more just to find slush and other cruddy conditions. It’s a good idea don’t you think.  Anyway, tight lines to ya’ll.

Swinging bugs early in the morning

Here in Ohio it's steelhead season. From late October to early May steelhead anglers are battling the cold to fish for these beautiful fish. Whether your a die-hard bug swinger or a traditional indicator nympher we're all out there doing what we love. Though steelheading is tough and we get skunked a lot when the fish is on the line there is nothing better. "The tug is the drug".

Steelhead fishing is not a come, catch, and leave situation. It's persistence, hard work, time, and money. These fish are by no means easy to catch. Last season I caught one fish. ONE FISH! You are not going to a bass pond to catch a bunch of largemouth you are entering into a whole new game. The steelhead game.
